Memorial Day is a holiday, which is celebrated on the last Monday of May each year. It is a day that is set aside to honor all of the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. In today’s post, we’ll take a look at some of the interesting history behind this holiday, as well as provide some tips for how you can make it special this year.
At Table-Mate®, we are proud of the men and women who serve our country in the military, and we encourage you to attend any festivities and celebrations that your town has planned. Once you’re done celebrating, you will probably be ready to grill and welcome the summer season with some friends. If you’re hosting a barbecue on Memorial Day, then make sure you have our portable table trays on hand to provide plenty of space for everyone to eat in comfort.
The act of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with wreaths, flags, and flowers gave way to the name Decoration Day. The name was changed to Memorial Day in the 1880s, and was made an official holiday in 1967. In December 2000, Congress made it a legal requirement to remember and honor the fallen at 3:00 p.m. local time.
Attend Local Ceremonies
While the majority of cities and towns across the U.S. are likely to have similar ceremonies, each one will have its own unique features. Perhaps your town has a solemn ceremony at a military statue or memorial. Maybe there is a parade that honors each branch of the armed forces, and you look forward to it each year. No matter what your community does, make sure to participate in this special holiday.
Visit Our Nation’s Capital
Whether or not you live near Washington, D.C., we encourage you to plan to visit our nation’s capital during Memorial Day at least once. There is something special about being in the heart of our democracy as you honor the men and women in our military with thousands of other people. The ceremonial changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington is an especially moving part of the celebration.
Display Your Respect
There are many ways that you can show your respect for our military, including flying the American flag at half-staff from sunrise to noon, placing flowers or flags on graves, and sponsoring a thank you bouquet to be placed at the war memorials on the Mall in D.C.
Host a Memorial Day Barbecue
If you’re not planning on traveling for Memorial Day this year, then consider hosting a barbecue at your home. Set out your portable table trays from Table-Mate® to ensure that there are plenty of places for your guests to set their food and drinks down when they are ready to eat. Our tray tables are easy to fold and slide under your couch to create extra space when you are ready to play games or watch the National Memorial Day Concert on TV.
No matter what your plans are this Memorial Day, we hope that you will take time to honor the men and women of our military in a special way. If a gathering is part of your plans, then make sure to browse our store at Table-Mate® to get all of the portable table trays you need.
